On Tuesday, Vishnu Deo Sai, the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Indian weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav for clinching the silver medal in the women's 53kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.

During a press briefing, Sai commended Gyaneshwari for her outstanding achievement, emphasizing that she has brought honor to Chhattisgarh with her remarkable performance. He stated, "Congratulations to Gyaneshwari Yadav... Her silver medal has brought pride to Chhattisgarh. I wish her continued success in her future endeavors."

Yadav's Impressive Performance

The 23-year-old athlete from Chhattisgarh exhibited exceptional focus and determination throughout the competition, setting multiple records during her quest for the top position, as reported by ESPN.

Gyaneshwari kicked off her event with a notable 82kg lift in the snatch, followed by a successful 85kg on her second attempt. She then achieved an impressive 88kg lift, breaking the Commonwealth Games record in her category, which put pressure on her competitor, Didih. However, the Nigerian lifter responded with a record-breaking 93kg snatch, taking the lead into the clean and jerk segment.

The Battle for Gold

The competition for the gold medal was intense, with both athletes demonstrating remarkable strength and skill. Gyaneshwari commenced the clean and jerk round with a powerful 103kg lift, bringing her total to 191kg and setting another Games record.

She followed this with a 107kg lift, further improving her record and narrowing the gap to Didih. With the gold medal still within reach, Gyaneshwari attempted a final lift of 111kg, which she successfully completed, finishing with a total of 199kg. This lift not only earned her another Games record but also a Commonwealth record. However, Didih countered with an impressive 113kg lift, securing the gold medal for Nigeria with a total of 206kg.

Strategic Shift to 53kg Category

Although Gyaneshwari did not secure the gold, her silver medal represents a significant achievement in her career. Previously, she competed in the 49kg category but made the strategic decision to move up to 53kg, acknowledging the challenge of facing India's Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu in the lower weight class.
