Khelo India Tribal Games Kick Off in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh is gearing up to host the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) starting Wednesday. Esteemed Indian athletes, including hockey Olympians Dilip Tirkey and Salima Tete, along with top sprinter Animesh Kujur, have praised the initiative as a significant opportunity for tribal communities to pursue sports careers.


Participation and Sports Overview

The event will see representation from thirty states and Union Territories, featuring a total of nine sports disciplines. Medals will be awarded in various categories including archery, athletics, football, hockey, swimming, weightlifting, and wrestling, while traditional sports like mallakhamb and kabaddi will be showcased as demonstration events.


Event Details and Locations

Approximately 3,800 athletes are expected to compete, with the Games concluding on April 3. Competitions will take place across three cities: Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Sarguja. Chhattisgarh, along with Odisha, Jharkhand, and Assam, will have the largest representation, each contributing over 100 athletes. The gender distribution among participants aims for near parity, adhering to Olympic standards.


Medal Distribution

A total of 106 gold medals will be contested, with athletics offering the highest number at 34. Other sports with significant gold medal opportunities include swimming (24), wrestling (18), weightlifting (16), and archery (10). Raipur will host hockey and football, while athletics will occur in Jagdalpur and wrestling in Sarguja.


Dilip Tirkey's Vision for Tribal Athletes

Dilip Tirkey, the president of Hockey India and a former Olympian, expressed pride in this historic event, emphasizing its role in providing a platform for tribal youth to showcase their skills. He highlighted the alignment of this initiative with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of fostering a sporting culture in India.


"This championship marks a significant milestone for our country, offering tribal players a chance to excel in sports and represent India. The Prime Minister's goal is to connect youth with sports, encouraging them to engage in various athletic pursuits," Tirkey stated.


Animesh Kujur Commends Government Efforts

Animesh Kujur, a national record holder in the 100m and 200m sprints, commended the Khelo India Tribal Games for reaching underserved areas in sports. He praised the government's initiative to unite young tribal athletes from across the nation at this event.


"Many regions in India lack access to sports, making these Games particularly special. I appreciate the government's efforts to bring together young sports enthusiasts from tribal backgrounds," Kujur remarked.


Athlete Selection Process

All participants in the Khelo India Tribal Games were selected through trials organized by national sports federations. Their performances will be closely monitored by coaches appointed by the Sports Authority of India.


Deputy CM's Support for the Games

Chhattisgarh's Deputy Chief Minister, Arun Sao, expressed enthusiasm for hosting this landmark event. He noted that the National Tribal Games are being organized for the first time in India, with competitions set to take place in Ambikapur, Jagdalpur, and Raipur.


"Over 3,000 athletes from across the country will participate, and preparations are nearing completion. The event will kick off on March 25 and conclude on April 3, benefiting tribal athletes nationwide. I extend my gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for their support," Sao stated.
