Meeting with Central Minister for Development

On Friday, Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai met with Central Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in New Delhi. During this meeting, he requested special exemptions in the central infrastructure schemes to accelerate development projects in Bastar. Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, Sai emphasized the urgent need for improved road connectivity in the region, which has transitioned to a peaceful area after decades of insurgency.

Challenges in Development Funding

Sai remarked that despite the benefits from the Prime Minister's Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), the low population density in many parts of Bastar presents challenges in adhering to the standard funding guidelines of the scheme. This situation complicates the construction of roads connecting remote villages.

Request for Relaxation of Guidelines

He noted that while several roads have been constructed under the PMGSY, the sparse population in the area necessitates a request for some relaxation in the scheme's rules. Chouhan listened patiently and assured that he would take initiative regarding this matter.

Plans for a New Road Network

Chouhan praised Sai's leadership and confirmed plans for a dedicated road network for Bastar. He stated that they had meaningful discussions about issues related to Chhattisgarh, highlighting the state's progress and its newfound peace. Given the unique circumstances of Bastar and the lack of significant development in recent years, they are considering a distinct road network under the PMGSY, acknowledging the pressing need for roads despite the low population density.
