Chennai Super Kings Sign Urvil Patel as Injury Replacement in IPL 2025

CSK's Latest Addition Amidst Challenging Season
As the IPL 2025 season approaches its final three matches, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have announced a new player addition. Despite being out of the playoff race, CSK is striving to avoid finishing at the bottom of the standings for the first time in their history.
The franchise has brought in wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel to fill the spot of the injured Vansh Bedi. The 22-year-old Bedi was on the verge of playing in the last match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) but suffered an ankle injury during warm-ups, which required assistance from team physios.
It was later confirmed that Bedi had torn a ligament in his right ankle, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. Acquired for ₹55 lakh during the last mega auction, Bedi did not get the chance to play in IPL 2025 and has now been replaced by Urvil Patel for the rest of the tournament.

Introducing Urvil Patel
Urvil Patel, a 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, plays for Gujarat in India's domestic cricket. He began his career with Baroda in 2018 but later transitioned to Gujarat, where he made a name for himself in red-ball cricket.
Known for his aggressive batting style, Patel holds the record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian. On November 27, 2024, he scored a remarkable 28-ball century against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), hitting 12 sixes and 7 fours as Gujarat chased down 156 runs in just 10.2 overs.
He followed this performance with another century on December 5, achieving a 36-ball hundred against Uttarakhand. In the 2024 SMAT season, he amassed 315 runs in 6 matches, boasting an average exceeding 78 and a strike rate close to 230.

Patel's IPL Journey and Experience
Despite remaining unsold in the 2025 IPL auction, CSK signed Patel for ₹30 lakh as an injury replacement. Previously, he was part of the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023 but did not play any matches.
Interestingly, the Gujarat Titans lost the 2023 final to CSK, where Ravindra Jadeja played a crucial role in securing Chennai's fifth IPL title with a four and a six in the final over.
Overall, Patel has participated in 47 T20 matches, scoring 1,162 runs at a strike rate of 170.38, including two centuries and four half-centuries. He has also played in 10 List A matches and 22 first-class matches.
