Free Transportation Initiative for Students

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to enhance its free bus transportation initiative for students attending corporation-run schools in Tamil Nadu's capital. Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumar shared insights on Thursday regarding the future expansion plans for this service, following a successful pilot phase in Chennai.

Currently, 373 students are benefiting from this initiative, which operates with four dedicated buses. The program, launched by Chief Minister MK Stalin, has garnered positive feedback from parents and the wider school community.

Plans for Service Expansion

Kumar mentioned, "Given the pilot project's success, we have instructed the education officer to gather data on students who need transportation, particularly those from suburban and remote areas." He added, "This information will guide us in extending the service to additional schools and students."

Enhancing Safety and Trust

The existing fleet will transport students from selected GCC schools, with each bus equipped with security personnel to ensure student safety. Kumar highlighted the positive response from parents, who view this initiative as a vital improvement in public education.

"The emotional feedback from families has been overwhelming. This initiative is helping to restore faith in corporation schools, making them a viable alternative to private institutions," he stated.

Significant Enrollment Growth

The introduction of the bus service coincides with a notable rise in student enrollment, with 22,000 new students registered in GCC schools this academic year, reflecting growing confidence in public education.

The Deputy Mayor credited the leadership of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin for implementing essential reforms and infrastructure improvements to support local schools.

The bus service, which cost Rs 1.11 crore, will also facilitate educational tours, interschool competitions, and sports events, enriching the overall student experience.
