Chaos Erupts at Anti-Muslim Protest Near NYC Mayor's Residence
Tensions Rise Outside Mayor's Home
Recent tensions escalated near the home of New York City's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, as an anti-Muslim demonstration turned chaotic. The unrest began when a counter-protester, opposing the rally named 'Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City,' allegedly ignited and threw a device into the crowd of demonstrators. The situation worsened when someone from the protest group reportedly used pepper spray against the counter-protesters. Reports indicate that the clash intensified shortly after the device was thrown.
Authorities confirmed that six individuals were arrested on Sunday in connection with the altercation. Jessica Tisch, the commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD), stated that two of those apprehended are suspected of possessing and igniting makeshift explosive devices.
Details of the Escalation
How the Situation Escalated
The confrontation began late Saturday morning during the protest, which was reportedly linked to conservative influencer Jake Lang. Witnesses noted that an individual associated with the anti-Islam protest sprayed pepper spray towards the counter-protesters. Shortly thereafter, a counter-protester allegedly ignited a device and threw it towards the demonstration. Tisch described the object as smaller than a football, which struck a barrier and extinguished itself just a few feet from police officers. The same individual reportedly attempted to retrieve another device but dropped it before it could be deployed. Officials confirmed that Mamdani and his spouse, Rama Duwaji, were not present at their residence during the incident.
Authorities Investigate the Device
What Authorities Say About the Device
According to police, the objects appeared to be jars wrapped in black tape, filled with nuts, bolts, and screws, and equipped with a hobby fuse that could be ignited. Investigators are currently assessing whether these devices were functional explosives or merely a hoax. Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke before one of the objects hit a barrier and extinguished. The NYPD's bomb squad was dispatched to the scene, and the items were secured in a containment vessel for further analysis. A spokesperson for Mayor Mamdani, Joe Calvello, indicated that the mayor has been updated on the investigation, which is being conducted by the NYPD in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.
