Chandigarh Prepares for Asian Relay Athletics Championship 2027
Governor Reviews Preparations for Upcoming Championship
On Wednesday, Gulab Chand Kataria, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, visited the Athletics Track Sports Complex located in Sector 7, Chandigarh. The purpose of his visit was to assess the preparations and proposed upgrades for hosting the Asian Relay Athletics Championship in 2027. He was accompanied by H Rajesh Prasad, Chief Secretary of UT Chandigarh, and Vivek Partap Singh, Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor.
Infrastructure Enhancements Under Discussion
During the inspection, the Administrator evaluated the current facilities at the sports complex and discussed various development initiatives planned by the Chandigarh Administration. He highlighted the necessity for sufficient seating arrangements to accommodate a large audience and instructed officials to construct robust and durable canopies over the seating areas for long-term public use.
Additionally, he emphasized the need for efficient entry and exit points, adequate sanitation facilities, athlete-friendly infrastructure, and other vital public amenities to ensure a comfortable experience for athletes, officials, spectators, and visitors from across Asia.
Significance of the Championship for Chandigarh
Gulab Chand Kataria expressed that hosting the Asian Relay Athletics Championship 2027 is a significant honor for Chandigarh. He noted that this event presents a valuable opportunity to enhance the city's sports infrastructure and elevate its international sporting reputation. The championship is expected to foster a sports culture among the youth and demonstrate Chandigarh's capability in organizing major international sporting events.
The visit was also attended by Home Secretary Mandip Singh Brar, Sports Secretary Prerna Puri, Chief Engineer CB Ojha, Director of Sports Saurabh Kumar Arora, and Director of Competitions from the Athletics Federation of India, Ravinder Chaudhary, along with other senior officials from the Chandigarh Administration.
