Chandigarh Hosts Its Inaugural International Marathon with Record Participation
Chandigarh International Marathon Kicks Off
On Sunday morning, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria, officially launched the first Chandigarh International Marathon. This event featured four distinct categories: a full marathon (42 km), a half marathon, a 10 km run, and a 5 km run. The marathon, organized by the Department of Sports under the Chandigarh Administration, saw enthusiastic participation from athletes, fitness lovers, and local residents.
Governor Celebrates Participation and Future Plans
In a statement to the media, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria reported that more than 3,500 individuals participated in the marathon across all categories, achieving remarkable times in both the full and half marathon events. He expressed gratitude to the participants and the media, while also announcing plans for a future cycle marathon aimed at engaging more children. Additionally, he emphasized ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse in Punjab through collaborative initiatives.
"The turnout for this marathon has been impressive, with races of 42 km, 21 km, 10 km, and 5 km taking place today. The 42 km race was completed in an astonishing 2 hours and 17 minutes, while the 21 km race concluded in just 1 hour and 1 minute. The participation of over 3,500 individuals showcases the event's success," he stated.
"I extend my thanks to all participants and the media for their support. We are also planning a cycle marathon to involve more children. Our discussions have focused on the ongoing efforts to create a drug-free Punjab, engaging police, educational institutions, the public, and community leaders," he added.
Governor Receives Symbolic Marathon T-Shirt
Prior to the marathon, Gulab Chand Kataria was presented with the official Marathon T-Shirt by officials from the Department of Sports, Chandigarh Administration, at Lok Bhavan on Saturday. He received T-Shirt No. 1, which symbolizes leadership and a commitment to sportsmanship. The presentation took place in the presence of Mandeep Singh Brar, Secretary Home, UT Chandigarh, and was conducted by Secretary Sports, Chandigarh, Prerna Puri, along with Director Sports, Saurabh Arora.
