Chakma Groups Deny Allegations Against Detained Russian National
Joint Statement from Chakma Organizations
Aizawl, April 1: Prominent civil society organizations representing the Chakma community, along with local officials from Mamit district, have collectively dismissed claims suggesting that a Russian national detained in Rajiv Nagar has ties to a Bangladesh-based insurgent group.
In a strongly worded response, the Young Chakma Association (YCA), Chakma Mahila Samiti (CMS), and Mizoram Chakma Students’ Union (MCSU), together with the village councils of Rajiv Nagar-I and II, labeled the reports as “false, baseless, and fabricated,” emphasizing the absence of factual verification.
The groups indicated that the controversy arose from widely shared posts and media narratives alleging that the detained individual was linked to the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS). They clarified that no such connection has been substantiated and urged caution against making assumptions without evidence.
An emergency meeting held on March 30 at the Zonal YCA Hall in Rajiv Nagar thoroughly reviewed the situation. After what they described as a detailed local verification, the involved organizations concluded that the allegations were unfounded and stemmed from misinformation.
Condemning the dissemination of what they termed “malicious content,” the statement warned that such reports could tarnish the reputation of the Rajiv Nagar community and disrupt communal harmony.
The signatories also criticized claims made by the Centre for Northeast India Security Studies (CNEISS), which allegedly attempted to link the arrest to PCJSS activities. They deemed these assertions as irresponsible and potentially harmful.
“The circulation of unverified and misleading information is a serious issue. It misleads the public and undermines trust within the community,” the statement noted, calling on media outlets, individuals, and online platforms to practice responsible reporting and verify facts before sharing sensitive information.
They warned that any individual or organization found intentionally spreading false information could face social ostracism and legal repercussions under applicable laws.
The joint statement, issued by representatives from the two village councils and leaders of YCA, MCSU, and CMS, reaffirmed their dedication to truth, accountability, and peaceful coexistence in the region.
