Chairman of Al-Falah University Arrested Amid Financial Irregularities
Significant Arrest by Delhi Police
The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has made a significant move by apprehending Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui, the chairman of Al-Falah University. This arrest stems from two First Information Reports (FIRs) filed following complaints to the University Grants Commission (UGC).
An official confirmed this information, noting that the police action was initiated after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) began its own investigation into the matter.
Context of the Arrest
The Crime Branch registered cases related to alleged irregularities and fraud concerning the operations of the private university, particularly after the explosion near the Red Fort.
Siddiqui was presented in a local court, which remanded him to four days of police custody for further questioning.
ED's Involvement and Police Response
The situation escalated when the ED commenced its actions due to financial discrepancies. Following the ED's involvement, Delhi Police acted swiftly to detain Chairman Siddiqui.
Connections to Controversial Staff Members
Al-Falah University came under scrutiny after reports revealed that Dr. Umar Nabi, convicted for the 2000 Red Fort blast that resulted in 13 fatalities, was employed there. Investigators also identified two associates, Dr. Muzammil Shakeel and Dr. Shaheen Shahid, linked to a so-called 'white-collar' terrorist network associated with the institution. These revelations raised national concerns regarding the university's hiring practices.
Accreditation and Financial Concerns
In November, the university's official website was taken offline following a show-cause notice issued by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) regarding alleged false accreditation claims. Subsequently, the ED announced plans to investigate the university's funding and financial transactions, particularly those involving its medical staff. Officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and as they review the university's records and question Siddiqui in detail, further developments are anticipated. This arrest marks a crucial step in the investigation of administrative and financial irregularities at the institution, which has faced increasing regulatory scrutiny in recent months.
