Central Government Extends Tenure of Home Secretary Govind Mohan Until 2027

Extension of Service for Home Secretary

On Wednesday, the central government announced a one-year extension for Govind Mohan, the Home Secretary, prolonging his tenure until August 22, 2027. This decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks the second consecutive year that Mohan, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1989 batch of the Sikkim cadre, has received an extension in his role as Home Secretary. Previously, an order issued on July 11, 2025, had already extended his term to August 22, 2026.

According to a directive from the Ministry of Personnel, Mohan's tenure has been extended for one year beyond August 22, 2026, until August 22, 2027, or until further notice, whichever comes first. This extension has been granted with exemptions from the provisions of Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. The ministry's order stated, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of service for Mr. Govind Mohan, IAS (SK:89), as Home Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs for one year beyond 22.08.2026, until 22.08.2027 or until further orders, whichever is earlier."

Mohan was initially set to retire on September 30, 2025, and he took office as Home Secretary on August 23, 2024. Prior to this role, he served as Secretary in the Ministry of Culture from October 1, 2021, to August 14, 2024. He holds a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from the Institute of Technology, BHU, completed in 1986, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Ahmedabad, obtained in 1988.
