Kohima, March 13: Officials announced that the initial phase of Census 2027, which will concentrate on house listing and housing, is scheduled to start in Nagaland in July 2026.
During a meeting in Kohima, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio emphasized the significance of Census 2027 for the state.
He remarked that the population growth rate in Nagaland has displayed inconsistencies when compared to the national average, urging elected officials and political leaders to address these discrepancies through responsible governance.
Rio highlighted that inflated census figures have led to complications in areas such as Aadhaar registration and school enrollment statistics.
He stressed the importance of preventing multiple entries during the census enumeration process.
Recognizing Nagaland as a predominantly Christian state, the Chief Minister called on all stakeholders to avoid pride in dishonest practices or unhealthy competition, advocating for honesty and integrity throughout the census process.
Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen underscored the necessity of an accurate census in the state, stating that dependable census data is vital for the planning and execution of various government projects and development initiatives.
Imchen expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for organizing this crucial briefing session.
Home Commissioner Abhijit Sinha provided an overview of Census 2027, followed by a comprehensive presentation from Director of Census Operations Zasekuolie Chusi regarding the methodologies, processes, and challenges associated with the census.
Chusi urged participants to ensure a clean and precise census by avoiding the enumeration of duplicate individuals and any intentional inflation of population figures.
He noted that such practices compromise the integrity of essential socio-economic data collected through the census, distorting the information needed for the planning and implementation of various government schemes and programs.
Chusi further emphasized that the census is not just a headcount but a crucial source of diverse and essential data necessary for policy formulation and developmental planning.
Deputy Chief Ministers T.R. Zeliang and Yanthungo Patton, along with Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, several Cabinet Ministers, Members of the Legislative Assembly, and senior officials were also present at the meeting.
