Significant Role in the Ram Janmabhoomi Movement

Her political journey began under the mentorship of Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia in Gwalior. Uma Bharti played a crucial role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, undertaking a challenging pilgrimage from Bhopal to Ayodhya after being suspended from her party to protect the site. Alongside Sadhvi Ritambhara, she initiated a movement and even staged a five-day hunger strike in July 2007 against the Sethusamudram project to save the Ram Setu.


Political Career Highlights

Uma Bharti contested her first Lok Sabha election in 1984 but faced defeat. However, she made a comeback in 1989 by winning the Khajuraho seat and maintained her hold on it in 1991, 1996, and 1998. In 1999, she was elected as a Member of Parliament from Bhopal. During Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government, she held various significant positions, including Minister of Human Resource Development, Youth Affairs and Sports, Tourism, Coal, and Mines.


Madhya Pradesh's First Female Chief Minister

In the 2003 assembly elections, Uma Bharti played a pivotal role in removing Digvijay Singh, who had been in power for ten years. To ensure the Congress party's defeat, the BJP appointed her as the state party president, leading her to resign from her ministerial position. Her efforts solidified the BJP's presence in the state, resulting in her becoming the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, marking a historic moment as the first woman to hold this office.


Resignation After Eight Months

However, her tenure as Chief Minister was short-lived; she resigned just eight months into her term in 1994 after a warrant was issued against her by the Hubli court. This marked a significant turn in her political journey.
