The procession on Gosai Bihu in Biswanath

Biswanath, April 16: A time-honored tradition was revived at Biswanath Ghat on Thursday as a large number of devotees came together to partake in the Gosai procession during Bohag Bihu. This ritual, rich in history and devotion, is believed to have been celebrated for over 341 years and is marked by immense enthusiasm.

Taking place on the second day of Bohag, known locally as Gosai Bihu, the event features a ceremonial procession transporting the deity (Gosai) from the Biswanath temple to Bhir village, situated approximately 5 kilometers to the north.

The deity is carried in a beautifully adorned palanquin, accompanied by the lively sounds of traditional dhol, devotional songs, and a multitude of devotees walking alongside.

The day commences with rituals at the temple, where the deity is ceremoniously welcomed before the procession begins.

“This tradition, celebrated on Gosai Bihu, has its roots in the Ahom era and continues throughout the day with steadfast devotion,” shared one participant.

As the palanquin progresses along its route, devotees gather to offer prayers and seek blessings, fostering a profoundly spiritual ambiance.

The procession pauses at the namghar in Bhir village, where prayers are offered to the deity before the return journey to the temple commences.

Another participant emphasized the cultural significance of the festival, stating, “The Gosai procession is intricately linked to our identity. Despite the passage of centuries, the enthusiasm and faith remain unwavering, and each year the gathering becomes more robust.”

The return journey of the procession is equally lively, characterized by festive celebrations, traditional music, and ongoing participation from devotees.

“This is more than just a ritual; it is a legacy handed down through generations. People from across the district and beyond come to partake in this sacred procession,” remarked a devotee.

The event not only carries religious importance but also acts as a cultural cornerstone, uniting communities from Biswanath and surrounding areas.
