PATACHARKUCHI, Oct 23: On the banks of the Pahumara river in Bajali district, the autumn scenery was filled with the sounds of cheers, traditional songs, and the vibrant hues of a rich cultural heritage. On Bijoya Dashami, a significant number of attendees gathered to celebrate the 122-year-old traditional boat race, highlighting the deep connection between nature, community, and cultural heritage.
The river, adorned with the delicate white blossoms of Kohuwa flowers swaying in the gentle autumn breeze, provided a stunning backdrop for this remarkable event. Spectators filled both banks and the concrete bridge, transforming the riverside into a lively arena of joy and shared celebration.
Hosted by the No. 2 Medhikuchi Boat Race Management Committee, this event has been a beloved tradition for generations, enduring despite the decline of many ancient customs. Locals note that the race has a history of over 121 years, with its organized format being maintained for nearly fifty years.
“This tradition is celebrated without any discrimination based on caste or creed, significantly enhancing social unity,” remarked Dipul Patgiri, a member of the organizing committee.
The race commenced at Member Ghat, featuring boats that were at least 50 feet long, each manned by over 50 rowers. Clad in colorful traditional outfits, the rowers propelled their long vessels through the river, synchronizing their strokes with the rhythmic folk songs and the beats of the taal.
Among the competing teams, ‘Moishal Bandhu’ claimed the first prize, while ‘Milanmala’ secured the second position.
