The Revered Relationship Between Guru and Shishya
Lucknow. The bond between a guru and shishya has long been regarded as exemplary in Indian culture. In the traditional Gurukul system, trust, respect, and dedication form the foundation of this relationship. It transcends mere education and knowledge, serving as a guiding force for the shishya's life, character development, and spiritual growth.
Enhancing Each Other's Gravitas
It can be said that elevating each other's significance is the highest tradition of the guru-shishya relationship. The guru's authority is reflected in the shishya's reverence. This respect remains intact even after the guru's physical departure. Likewise, a worthy guru continually strives to enhance the shishya's stature. In this context, the three generations of the Gorakhnath Peeth stand out remarkably.
A Testament to the Guru-Shishya Bond
The relationship between the revered Guru Brahmalin Mahant Avedyanath (Bade Maharaj) and Gorakshpeethadhishwar and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath exemplifies this bond.
Yogi Adityanath: Illuminating the Lamp of Public Welfare
Bade Maharaj had immense faith in Yogi as his disciple and successor, and Yogi reciprocated this with deep dedication, respect, and reverence. Bade Maharaj served as a guiding light for Yogi.
Following the tradition of the Peeth, the lamp of public welfare lit by his guru is being continuously illuminated by Yogi, especially in his role as Chief Minister. He prioritizes public welfare while enriching society, culture, and social harmony.
The Weight of His Guru's Orders
The depth of Yogi's reverence for his late guru, Mahant Avedyanath, is witnessed by those associated with the Peeth. During his time, the orders of Mahant Avedyanath held a 'veto power' for Yogi. Even today, amidst his busy schedule, whenever he visits the Gorakhnath Temple, he first seeks the blessings of his late guru. This practice continues as long as he resides in the monastery. The same bond existed between Yogi's guru and his own guru, Brahmalin Mahant Digvijayanath.
Guru Purnima and Weekly Memorial Ceremonies
Every Guru Purnima and the weekly memorial ceremonies held in September serve as a testament to the guru-shishya tradition at the Peeth. During these events, the Peeth remembers its gurus, discussing their contributions, personalities, and social concerns, along with pressing national issues. This reflects a commitment to honoring their legacies and fulfilling their resolutions.
Public Reverence During Festivals
The reverence for the Peeth is evident among millions in Purvanchal at various times. The Khichdi Mela, which begins with Makar Sankranti and lasts for about a month, is a prime example. During this period, millions of devotees from across the country, including Nepal and Bihar, come to pay their respects to Guru Gorakhnath, regardless of the weather. Some come to fulfill vows, while others seek new blessings. On Guru Purnima, a large number of people gather to pay homage to the Peethadhishwar. Additionally, the processions held the day before and on Holi, as well as the Vijayadashami procession, are other significant events that showcase the community's deep respect for the Peeth.
However, the Gorakhnath Peeth does not aim to create disciples. Yet, due to its prominence and extensive social concerns, it naturally garners the reverence of millions. It serves as a leading Peeth in Gorakhpur and Purvanchal, with its decisions widely accepted, especially regarding festivals and celebrations.
Upcoming Events for Guru Purnima
In celebration of Guru Purnima, a weekly Shri Ram Katha has commenced at the Gorakhnath Temple from July 4. Acharya Shantanu Maharaj from Prayagraj is the storyteller. The sessions are held daily from 9 AM to 11:30 AM and again from 3 PM to 6 PM.
