Celebrating Sustainable Development: A Tribute to Jimmy Magilligan
Honoring a Legacy of Sustainability
In remembrance of Jimmy Magilligan, a dedicated advocate for sustainable development and an 'Order of the British Empire' honoree, a week-long event titled 'Sustainable Development Week' was organized. This initiative, guided by Padma Shri Dr. Janak Palta Magilligan, aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation and sustainable living within the community.
Kickoff with Solar Cooking Festival
The week commenced with a Solar Cooking Food Festival, attracting around 60 to 70 participants who prepared meals using solar energy. Attendees had the opportunity to learn practical solar cooking techniques and were inspired to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles.
Engaging Discussions Across Institutions
Following the festival, seminars were held at various local institutions, including Acropolis College, Vaishnav College, and the Journalism and Mass Communication Department of Devi Ahilya University, along with Life Care Hospital. These discussions covered vital topics such as water conservation, pollution control, organic diets, and the utilization of solar energy.
Dr. Janak Palta's Commitment to Sustainability
Dr. Janak Palta Magilligan shared that her late husband, Jimmy Magilligan, dedicated his entire life to sustainable development. She has been providing free training on adopting sustainable lifestyles for the past 41 years, emphasizing practices like 'zero waste' living, growing one's own food, and planting trees equivalent to one's age.
A Spiritual Conclusion
The main event concluded with a multi-faith prayer session, creating a spiritual and cultural ambiance. The program began with a conch shell blowing by Tapan Mukherjee and the chanting of 'Om' by Virendra Goyal. Subhash Palta welcomed the guests, and Dr. Janak Palta led a special prayer in memory of Jimmy Magilligan.
Cultural Performances and Community Feast
The event featured prayers from the Bahá'í faith, devotional songs, the Gayatri mantra, verses from the Bhagavad Gita, and readings from the Guru Granth Sahib, promoting a message of interfaith harmony. Literary presentations included a solar energy-inspired poem by Sushmita Bhattacharya, along with readings from various spiritual texts by other participants.
A highlight of the program was the Ram Stuti Sankirtan performed by musicians Shobha Chaudhary and Santosh Agnihotri. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Abha Palta Tiwari.
After the program, attendees enjoyed a communal meal. Notably, this year's event, held at Giridarshan, maintained its tradition of being completely waste-free and pollution-free, just like in the past 15 years.
