Early Life and Family Background
Born on April 12, 1943, in Chiplun, Maharashtra, Sumitra Mahajan is the daughter of Purushottam Nilkanth Sathe and Usha. She completed her education at Devi Ahilya Bai University in Indore. On January 29, 1965, she married Jayant Mahajan in Indore.
Political Journey
In 1990, Sumitra Mahajan took on the role of president of the Madhya Pradesh BJP Women's Wing. By 1992, she had also served as the vice president and secretary of the party's Madhya Pradesh unit, and in 1998, she became the national general secretary. Her political career began in the 1989 general elections when she contested for the Lok Sabha and defeated former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Prakash Chandra Sethi.
She has been a consistent presence in the Lok Sabha from the Indore constituency for eight terms, making her the only woman to achieve this feat. Additionally, from 2002 to 2004, she was part of the central cabinet, overseeing ministries such as Human Resource Development and Petroleum. In 2014, she was appointed as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha under the Modi government. However, in 2019, Sumitra Mahajan decided not to contest in the Lok Sabha elections.
