The CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) celebrated National Science Day with enthusiasm, focusing on the theme “Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat.”
This day honors the groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel Prize winner Sir C.V. Raman in 1928.
Key Highlights from the Event:
- Opening Remarks: Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of CSIR-IHBT, welcomed the guests and highlighted the institute's role in enhancing bio-economy, improving livelihoods, and its initiatives in floriculture and aroma. He praised programs like Jigyasa and various skill development efforts aimed at empowering the youth.
- Chief Guest: Dr. Shekar C. Mande, President of the Indian National Science Academy and former Director General of CSIR, commended IHBT for its contributions to rural communities. He explained the Raman Effect and emphasized the importance of curiosity and indigenous technologies for inclusive growth.
- Guest of Honour: Dr. Sudhir Sopory, Senior Emeritus Scientist at ICGEB, called for collaborative efforts to promote science and contribute to nation-building.
- Featured Lecture: Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, former Director of CSIR-CFTRI, presented a talk on “Achieving Food and Nutritional Security in Bharat – Pivotal Role of Women.” She discussed traditional foods, balanced diets, and the significant contributions of trailblazing women scientists like Dr. Kamala Sohonie.
Significant Announcements:
- Six technology transfer agreements were established with industry partners from Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.
- An MoU for academic collaboration was signed with Chitkara University.
- A new plant variety, Inula racemosa “Him Pushkarmool,” was launched.
- Stevia-based products developed by RJ Saints from Una were introduced.
- The Jaivsampada Udyan, a garden under CSIR’s Mission on Bioresource Conservation, was inaugurated.
Special Acknowledgment:
Female staff in Science and Technology at IHBT were recognized for their valuable contributions. The event also welcomed dignitaries, media personnel, and students, including 39 students and 2 teachers from JNV Paprola as part of the Jigyasa initiative.
The celebrations underscored IHBT’s dedication to advancing science for societal benefit and highlighted the crucial role of women in fostering a Viksit Bharat.
