Celebrating National Science Day: A Tribute to Innovation and Research
National Science Day Celebrations
New Delhi, Feb 28: Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his heartfelt greetings to scientists and researchers nationwide on the occasion of National Science Day, commending their commitment to innovation and the advancement of the nation.
In a message shared on the social media platform X, Shah remarked, "Warm wishes to all our scientists and researchers on National Science Day. Your relentless pursuit illuminates our path, crafting solutions for a brighter future. Let this day invigorate our passion and determination to innovate and shape our destiny."
National Science Day is celebrated on February 28 to honor the remarkable discovery of the Raman Effect by the distinguished physicist C.V. Raman in 1928. This pivotal research on light scattering earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, marking a significant milestone for Indian science on the global stage.
Each year, this day pays tribute to Raman’s groundbreaking contributions, making him the first Asian laureate in the sciences. Over the years, National Science Day has transformed into a nationwide initiative aimed at nurturing scientific curiosity, promoting research and innovation, and motivating young individuals to explore careers in science and technology.
This year's national celebrations are taking place at Vigyan Bhawan, organized by the Department of Science and Technology under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The event kicks off with special lectures led by Principal Scientific Adviser Professor Ajay Kumar Sood.
The program includes a variety of expert talks on diverse topics. Dr. Shubha V. Iyengar will discuss advancements in indigenous aerospace and defense technologies, while Dr. K. Balasubramanian will highlight the significance of critical metals and materials. Shri Shashi S. Vempati will address innovations in direct-to-mobile broadcasting technology.
A panel discussion examining the relationship between science and public policy is also scheduled as part of the program.
Experts from various institutions, including NITI Aayog, the Indian National Science Academy, CSIR institutions, CSTEP, and IGSTC, will engage in discussions aimed at aligning scientific research with national development objectives.
Additionally, sessions focused on communicating science in Indian languages and interactive engagements titled “Face to Face with Scientists” are included in the agenda.
Beyond celebrating a significant scientific milestone, National Science Day acts as a platform to foster scientific thinking, enhance the link between research and policymaking, promote indigenous innovation, and ensure inclusive participation, especially for women in STEM fields.
