A month-long workshop dedicated to the traditional Mandi Kalam miniature painting wrapped up on Thursday at Upper Bijni in Mandi, with Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan overseeing the closing ceremony. This initiative was organized by the Himachal Pradesh State Handicrafts and Handloom Corporation (HIMCRAFT) to foster and safeguard the region's artistic legacy.

During the event, the Deputy Commissioner awarded certificates to the participants, praising their commitment and creativity. He emphasized the government's ongoing dedication to skill enhancement and capacity building for the youth, highlighting that such programs are essential for nurturing traditional art forms.

Devgan pointed out that Mandi has long been a hub for cultural preservation and artistic brilliance. He remarked on the gradual revival of Mandi Kalam, a unique style of Pahari miniature painting, which holds great promise for future growth. He encouraged young artists to immerse themselves in this art form, asserting that ongoing efforts and creativity are crucial for its broader acknowledgment.

Commenting on the artworks created during the workshop, he noted significant progress and artistic skill displayed by the participants throughout the training. The administration is contemplating a public exhibition to display these creations, which would enhance visibility and market opportunities for the artisans.

Support for Artisans and Craftsmanship

The Deputy Commissioner reiterated the administration's commitment to bolstering the ecosystem for artisans and craftsmen, while promoting fine arts through organized initiatives. He also acknowledged HIMCRAFT’s efforts in revitalizing and endorsing indigenous art forms.


Experts at the workshop discussed the historical importance of Mandi Kalam, which is believed to have thrived from the 16th to the 19th centuries. This art form is celebrated for its detailed craftsmanship and portrayal of mythological stories, local legends, nature, and historical events, showcasing a rich heritage of skilled artistry.


Acknowledgments and Future Directions

HIMCRAFT District Incharge Akshay Singh Dode welcomed the chief guest and presented him with a Mandi Kalam painting as a gesture of appreciation. He shared that the workshop, funded by the Ministry of MSME, saw participation from 20 women artisans. The training focused on miniature painting techniques, design skill enhancement, and entrepreneurship development.


Dode also expressed gratitude to the Municipal Corporation for providing the venue. Master craftsperson Rajesh Kumar and designer Anshul Malhotra played key roles in training and mentoring the participants throughout the workshop.


This initiative is viewed as a significant step towards revitalizing traditional art practices in Himachal Pradesh, while also creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local artisans, especially women.
