Celebrating Indian Hockey: Sitaare Aur Soorma Initiative Unites Generations
A Vibrant Celebration of Hockey in Chennai
On Tuesday, Indian hockey showcased its spirit in Chennai through 'Sitaare Aur Soorma,' an initiative by the Soorma Hockey Club under JSW Sports. This event brought together hockey legends, current international players, and aspiring young athletes to celebrate the sport's rich heritage and promising future.
An Engaging Experience for All
Taking place at the Ramchandra University Ground, the event was designed as an interactive hockey experience rather than a formal exhibition. Students, fans, media, and players shared the space, all connected by their love for the game. A highlight was the unveiling of the Soorma Hockey Club's new jersey, symbolizing the connection between the club's storied past and the future generation of players.
Inspiring Young Players
As the gates opened, the venue filled with eager young trainees and students, setting a vibrant tone for the day. The event kicked off with structured hockey clinics led by renowned players Rani Rampal and Sardar Singh. Children participated in training sessions focused on attack, midfield, and defense, with interactive elements allowing players to provide guidance and answer questions.
Exciting Exhibition Matches
The day continued with an exhilarating 7-a-side exhibition match featuring a mix of Soorma Hockey Club's men's and women's teams alongside Indian hockey legends like Vasudevan Baskaran and Mohammed Riaz. This match, played in four short quarters, showcased a blend of generations and genders, embodying the event's energetic spirit.
Honoring the Legends
A poignant moment occurred during the legend felicitation segment, where esteemed figures from Indian hockey were honored in front of the younger generation. The sight of these legends alongside current players during the jersey reveal highlighted themes of continuity, respect, and shared ownership of the sport.
Coaches Share Their Vision
Philippe Goldberg, Head Coach of Soorma Hockey Club, expressed his excitement, stating, 'The team always comes first. We have immense talent, and our focus is on building unity both on and off the field. If we achieve this, success and joy will naturally follow, inspiring young players in India.'
Jude Menezes, Head Coach of the Women's team, added, 'Our overseas players have felt welcomed and embraced Indian culture. The girls are fit and knowledgeable about hockey. Now, we need to strengthen our on-field connections.'
A Lasting Legacy
The Sitaare Aur Soorma initiative serves as a reminder that the strength of Indian hockey lies not only in its achievements but also in its legacy, where legends inspire new stars, and these stars ignite the dreams of future generations.
