A Holistic Approach to Fitness

The significance of comprehensive fitness was prominently showcased during the 68th Fit India Sundays on Cycle event held at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Pool Complex. In addition to the standard 5km cycling ride, over 800 participants engaged in various fitness activities set up throughout the complex, just two days ahead of World Health Day.

A Variety of Fitness Activities

The event featured multiple activity zones that included badminton, table tennis, cricket, tug of war, yoga, skipping challenges, and classic indoor games like carrom, ludo, and snakes & ladders. A special yoga consultation booth, supported by the Ministry of AYUSH under its Yoga 365 initiative, allowed participants to relax through guided sessions. Additionally, a smart wall fitness challenge aimed at enhancing neural activity and darts stations attracted participants of all ages, as reported by SAI Media.

A Nationwide Initiative for Fitness

Fit India Sundays on Cycle is organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) in partnership with various organizations, including the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Indian Rope Skipping Federation, Yogasana Bharat, Raahgiri Foundation, MY Bikes, and MY Bharat. This cycling initiative takes place simultaneously across all States and Union Territories, including SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), SAI Training Centres (STCs), Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs), and Khelo India Centres (KICs).

Participants Share Their Experiences

"I came here just to cycle, but this feels like a full-fledged fitness festival. My kids are playing badminton and table tennis, while I joined yoga. There is an activity in store for everyone," shared Ritu Sharma, a local resident of Delhi.

Another participant, Jasmeet Chandok, expressed, "The energy here is unbelievable. From music to games to cycling, it feels like a World Health Day carnival."

Healthcare Community's Role in Promoting Fitness

The event saw significant involvement from India's healthcare community, with organizations like the Indian Medical Association and the Indian Red Cross Society participating as special partners. Supported by partners such as ESIC Social Security, the event highlighted the synergy between healthcare and fitness, emphasizing that prevention and active living are interconnected.

Healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, took the spotlight as advocates for preventive fitness, underscoring the importance of daily wellness habits. The venue was alive with energetic Zumba sessions, yoga classes, and rope skipping activities, while participants explored a wide range of recreational and fitness options.

Celebrity Endorsements and Expert Participation

The event also featured several notable guests and fitness influencers, including former IPL cricketer Parvinder Awana, powerlifting expert Mukesh Gehlot, and Paralympian Pushpendra Singh. Leading medical professionals, such as Dr. Shama Batra (President, East Delhi IMA) and Dr. Ajay K. Gupta (President, Delhi IAP), were also present, emphasizing the government's commitment to preventive healthcare and holistic wellness.

Parvinder Awana remarked, "This should not be done only on Sundays. One should make it a daily habit." Powerlifting champion Mukesh Gehlot added, "This is a new experience after many years, and I truly enjoyed it." Paralympian Pushpendra Singh noted, "Our Prime Minister's initiative, Sundays on Cycle, is one of the best things we can adopt in our lives to stay fit."

Community Voices and Engagement

Participants echoed the same enthusiasm. A young doctor from Delhi mentioned that cycling with colleagues felt "like a celebration beyond the hospital walls," while a nursing student described the event as "a refreshing reminder that taking care of others begins with taking care of ourselves." Families, students, and senior citizens all participated, capturing moments and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

Adding a social message to the festivities, a street play by the Raahgiri Foundation emphasized the importance of active lifestyles and safer public spaces, receiving applause from the audience.

A Growing Movement for Fitness

Launched in December 2024 by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, Fit India Sundays on Cycle has evolved into a significant movement, with over 28 lakh citizens participating across more than 2.63 lakh locations nationwide.
