Meanwhile, in Assam, Rima Trisha Haloi, an assistant commissioner and accomplished MMA fighter, made a remarkable comeback to her fitness routine after an injury by joining the cycling event.
Raahgiri Day Returns with a Grand Event in Delhi
The central event of this 65th edition occurred in New Delhi, attracting over 10,000 participants. Connaught Place transformed into a festive hub as Fit India's flagship campaign collaborated with Raahgiri Foundation, marking the revival of Raahgiri Day.
This special edition welcomed participants of all ages, from toddlers to seniors, engaging in various fitness activities such as Rope Skipping, Zumba, Yogasana, and fun games before cycling around Connaught Place. The event, dedicated to Consumer Rights, featured notable attendees including Delhi's Home Minister Ashish Sood and fitness experts like Captain Akshay Chopra, a former IAF pilot, and gold medalists from the Asian Wrestling Championship.
Promoting Health and Sustainability
Sood emphasized the significance of initiatives like Raahgiri Day and Sundays on Cycle in fostering a healthier and safer Delhi. He noted that promoting walking, cycling, and public transport not only enhances road safety but also combats air pollution, urging attendees to adopt these habits regularly.
Special guests echoed the importance of such events in countering the growing reliance on technology and encouraging physical activity. Neelam, a gold medalist, stated, "Caring for our bodies is our primary responsibility. A fit body enables us to achieve more." Akshay Chopra remarked on the positive shift in mindset towards fitness, encouraging ongoing participation.
A Collective Movement for Healthier Communities
Supported by key health, mobility, public safety, and environmental organizations, the event highlighted that fitness is a shared goal that begins in our communities. Mayank Srivastava from the Sports Authority of India remarked, "Fit India is not merely a campaign; it is a movement aimed at fostering a healthier, more active nation. Initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Fit India Movement encourages fitness as a daily practice, exemplified by the 'Sundays on Cycle' initiative launched in December 2024."
Creating People-Centric Urban Spaces
Sarika Panda Bhatt, Founder of Raahgiri Foundation, emphasized the importance of reclaiming streets for the public. She stated, "Raahgiri Day is about returning streets to the people. This special edition with Fit India not only celebrates fitness but also highlights the connection between cleaner air and safer streets. Cycling and walking foster vibrant, safe spaces, leading to healthier cities."
Collaborative Efforts for Public Awareness
The event saw participation from various organizations, including the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and the Commission for Air Quality Management. A special segment by I4C focused on cyber safety and awareness, particularly for youth and families, adding an educational aspect to the celebrations.
Through this vibrant morning at one of Delhi's busiest areas, Raahgiri Day and Fit India Sundays on Cycle showcased the potential of our streets when designed for people. The event reinforced the idea that cycling and walking are not only beneficial for personal health but also crucial for reducing pollution and creating sustainable urban environments.
