Celebrating Dhanteras: Auspicious Rituals and Shopping Timings
Dhanteras Celebration Details
This year, the grand festival of Diwali will be celebrated across the country on November 8, commencing with the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras on November 6. This five-day celebration begins with Dhanteras, which is considered highly beneficial for prosperity, wealth, and new purchases. Traditionally, people buy gold and silver jewelry, coins, and new utensils, wishing for happiness and peace in their homes. Additionally, special prayers are offered to Lord Kuber, the deity of wealth, and Goddess Lakshmi, as it is believed that establishing auspicious items in the home on this day brings joy and lasting prosperity.
According to the Hindu calendar, the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartik will begin on November 6 at 10:30 AM and conclude on November 7 at 10:47 AM. The worship performed during the Pradosh period on Dhanteras holds significant importance. The auspicious time for worshiping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber is set from 6:02 PM to 7:57 PM, while the total duration of the Pradosh period is from 5:33 PM to 8:09 PM.
Purchasing gold on Dhanteras is considered extremely auspicious, with the shopping window opening on November 6 at 10:30 AM and lasting until 6:37 AM on November 7. In traditional beliefs, gold symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and financial stability, prompting many to specifically buy gold jewelry or coins on this day. There is a strong belief that bringing gold into the home on Dhanteras ensures the continuous blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and prevents any lack of wealth in the family.
Alongside gold, the tradition of buying silver and new utensils has been followed for centuries. Silver is viewed as a symbol of purity, coolness, and positivity, leading people to purchase silver coins, jewelry, and other items, which are later used in Diwali worship. Similarly, according to their financial capacity and family needs, individuals also buy new utensils made of brass, copper, or steel. It is believed that the entry of new utensils into the home on this day signifies abundance and continuous progress.
On this special occasion, not only metals but also the purchase of idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha holds great significance. Goddess Lakshmi is revered as the deity of wealth and material comforts, while Lord Ganesha is associated with wisdom, intellect, and the removal of obstacles in new ventures. Many families place these beautiful idols in their home altars and perform special prayers on Diwali night. Additionally, silver or other metal feet of Goddess Lakshmi are placed at the main entrance or near the worship area, symbolizing her divine arrival and blessings in the home.
