Celebrating Bhupen Hazarika: A Year of Commemorations and Translations

A Tribute to a Musical Legend
Guwahati, June 4: The life story of the iconic musician and Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika is set to be translated into 23 different Indian languages. This initiative, announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aims to distribute the book across four lakh libraries, educational institutions, and government offices.
During a press briefing at Lok Sewa Bhawan, the Chief Minister revealed that the book, penned by esteemed author Anuradha Sharma Pujari, will also reach 10 lakh households in Assam following a peer review process.
As part of the preparations for the centenary celebrations of the maestro, Sarma mentioned that the core committee convened for its inaugural meeting on Wednesday.
This committee comprises Bhupen Hazarika’s son Tez Hazarika, grandson Sage Hazarika, brother Samar Hazarika, sister-in-law Manisha Hazarika, along with other close associates of the legendary figure.
“They provided insightful suggestions that the government will take into account and implement where possible,” Sarma noted.
He reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the centenary celebrations, confirming that the Prime Minister has accepted the invitation to be the Chief Guest at the event in Guwahati.
The state government plans to honor the birth centenary with a series of events throughout the year across the nation. Additionally, Sarma disclosed plans to issue a commemorative coin in tribute to Bhupen Hazarika, with formal requests already submitted to the Finance Minister and the Reserve Bank of India.
In April, the Assam Cabinet had sanctioned the formation of a 50-member committee, led by the Chief Minister, to manage the centenary celebrations commencing on September 8. All chief ministers from the Northeast will be invited to serve as patrons of this committee.
Sarma emphasized that central events will take place not only in Guwahati but also in New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Arunachal Pradesh.
Invitations will be sent to both the President and the Prime Minister for the opening and closing ceremonies.
