Imphal, May 7: The Purul village in Manipur was bustling with energy as the annual Purul (Hiimai) Paoki Festival wrapped up on Wednesday, attracting attendees from various regions and showcasing the rich agricultural traditions and community spirit. Located in the Senapati district, Purul served as the backdrop for this vibrant event.
The festival, which took place from May 4 to 6, united villagers, youth volunteers, and visitors in a celebration deeply connected to agriculture.
Organized by the Purul Youth and Students’ Organisation (PYSO) with assistance from the State Tourism Department, the festival seamlessly combined cultural heritage with active participation in farming activities.
It commenced with preparations for a communal feast, fostering a sense of collective involvement.
On the second day, participants uprooted paddy saplings while welcoming guests, and the final day was dedicated to the transplantation process, known locally as Paobii Payu. The fields buzzed with activity as everyone worked together, highlighting the essence of collaboration.
Officials remarked that the festival symbolizes the lasting bond between the community and the land.
In his address, chief guest Thaithuilung Pamei, Commissioner for Agriculture, Sericulture, Horticulture, and Soil Conservation, emphasized that such traditions embody the wisdom of past generations while also indicating the necessity for modern agricultural methods to ensure sustainable livelihoods.
PYSO president RL Nada Redeem stated that the festival transcends mere agricultural practices, serving as a reminder of shared values and the knowledge passed down through generations.
The event also included a traditional wrestling competition, where participants from Purul and neighboring villages competed, with Veikholou from Saranamei emerging as the champion.
