Nationwide Celebrations for PMMSA's 10th Anniversary
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will kick off nationwide celebrations on Tuesday, marking "10 Years of PMMSA - A Decade of Care." These events will commemorate a decade of successful implementation of the Prime Minister's Safe Motherhood Campaign (PMMSA), one of India's key initiatives aimed at ensuring safe pregnancies and healthy motherhood. According to the Ministry, the inaugural ceremony will be presided over by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda. Additionally, to celebrate the completion of ten years of the PMMSA, Minister Nadda will unveil a special ₹75 commemorative coin and a ₹5 postage stamp. This campaign has played a crucial role in promoting safe motherhood and strengthening maternal health services across the country.
Transformative Impact on Maternal Health
Launched by Prime Minister Modi on June 9, 2016, this initiative has revolutionized maternal and newborn healthcare by providing free, comprehensive, and quality antenatal care (ANC) services to pregnant women on the 9th of every month. As we celebrate a decade of excellence (2016-2026), PMMSA stands as a vital pillar of the Government of India's Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH+N) strategy, dedicated to transforming the quality, coverage, diagnosis, and counseling services of antenatal care, impacting millions of families and significantly reducing the country's maternal mortality rate (MMR). During this celebration, awareness and promotional activities will be organized in states and union territories to encourage pregnant women and their families to take advantage of the nine guaranteed free services available under PMMSA and to highlight the importance of timely and quality antenatal care.
Engaging the Private Sector for Better Outcomes
This program adopts a systematic approach to engage the private sector, encouraging private practitioners to voluntarily participate in the campaign, assisting in the development of awareness strategies, and involving them in government health centers. PMMSA aligns with the comprehensive goals of the National Health Mission (NHM) under the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAH+N) strategy. The primary objectives of this initiative include ensuring that every pregnant woman receives at least one check-up by a doctor/specialist during the second or third trimester, improving the quality of care during antenatal examinations, early identification and management of high-risk pregnancies (HRP), preparing appropriate delivery plans for each pregnant woman, ensuring proper management of malnourished women, and focusing on adolescents and early pregnancies.
