CBSE Cancels Class 12 Exams in West Asia Amid Ongoing Conflict

Impact of Conflict on Education

The ongoing severe conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel has now extended its reach into the education sector. In a critical announcement made on Sunday, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to cancel all remaining Class 12 board examinations in the affected countries of West Asia. This decision prioritizes the safety of thousands of students who are unable to reach examination centers due to the war's devastation. This cancellation will affect over 150 schools recognized by CBSE in countries such as Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Clarification on Examination Status

In its sixth circular issued after March 1, CBSE clarified that previously postponed papers will now also be considered canceled. Examinations scheduled between March 16 and April 10, 2026, will no longer take place. The board has stated that it will provide further information regarding the results for the affected students at a later date.

Official Communication and Coordination

According to CBSE's examination controller, Sanyam Bhardwaj, this decision was made after reviewing the feasibility of conducting exams and considering feedback from schools and officials in the impacted regions. Indian ambassadors in Gulf countries and the Consul General in Dubai have been informed to ensure proper coordination.

Details on Board Exams and Previous Postponements

The Class 12 board examinations commenced on February 17. Before the postponement on March 1, several subjects, including Physics, Chemistry, Geography, and Accountancy, had already been successfully conducted. Earlier, on March 5, CBSE had also canceled all remaining Class 10 examinations in this region.

Historical Context of Exam Cancellations

This is one of the few instances in recent years where CBSE has had to cancel examinations abroad. Similar actions were taken during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21 and in cases of severe weather or local emergencies.

Impact on Students

The cancellation will significantly affect thousands of Indian students studying in CBSE-affiliated schools across Gulf countries, including major centers like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Riyadh. This year, over 4.37 million students registered for CBSE examinations, with approximately 2.51 million in Class 10 and 1.86 million in Class 12.
