CBS Shifts Late Night Programming to Byron Allen's Comedy Shows
CBS Announces New Late Night Lineup
Beginning May 22, CBS will transition its 11:35 p.m. time slot to "Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen," following the final episode of Stephen Colbert's Late Show. The show will air for half an hour, featuring two consecutive episodes each night. The subsequent 12:35 a.m. slot will be occupied by "Funny You Should Ask," a game show created by Allen and hosted by Jon Kelley. "Comics Unleashed" previously occupied the 12:35 a.m. slot after CBS canceled the game show "After Midnight" last September, marking this change as a significant elevation for Allen's program.
CBS has a time-buy agreement with Allen's company for the 2026-27 season, indicating that Allen finances the placement of his shows on the network. Following the announcement of Colbert's cancellation, Allen expressed his eagerness for the opportunity, stating at New York Ad Week, "If they're looking for a show, my hand is already up."
Reasons Behind Colbert's Departure
Reasons Behind Colbert's Departure
Last year, CBS revealed its decision to conclude The Late Show, with Colbert's last episode scheduled for May 21. The network cited financial challenges in the late-night sector, describing the choice as "agonizing." However, some critics questioned this rationale, suggesting that political factors may have influenced the cancellation. Colbert has been a prominent critic of former President Trump, and CBS's parent company, Paramount, was seeking approval from the Trump administration for a merger with Skydance at that time. Additionally, CBS had recently settled a defamation lawsuit involving Trump, which many legal experts deemed weak.
