Kolkata, August 10: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has established a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve into the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, which occurred in August 2024. As part of their inquiry, the SIT has seized the mobile phone of a female hospital employee.
This staff member was reportedly the first to notify the victim's family about the tragic incident after the body of the junior doctor was discovered in a seminar room on the morning of August 9.
According to sources familiar with the case, the confiscation of the employee's phone was prompted by allegations from the victim's relatives, who claimed that she provided inconsistent information during her calls to them shortly after the incident.
The mobile device has been sent for forensic analysis, with investigators examining call logs and other data to address several pressing questions surrounding the case.
The SIT is investigating the circumstances under which the hospital staff member reached out to the victim's family and is working to validate the claims made by the family regarding the contradictory information relayed by her in subsequent communications.
Investigators believe that the call records may yield significant insights into a potential conspiracy linked to the rape and murder. They are also scrutinizing the calls made and received by the female staff member prior to her contact with the victim's family.
Sources indicate that the forensic examination aims to determine if any deleted data can be recovered from the mobile phone and to uncover any new leads from other forms of digital communication beyond the call logs.
Additionally, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has mandated a renewed investigation by state police into the swift cremation of the victim, which took place two years ago at a crematorium in Panhati, North 24 Parganas district.
