Arrest of Meitei Leader by CBI

New Delhi: On Sunday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) apprehended Kanan Singh, a member of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol (AT), for his alleged role in the violent incidents that occurred in Manipur in 2023, according to officials.

The arrest took place at Imphal airport, and Singh was subsequently transported to Guwahati, where he is set to appear in court for police remand.

A spokesperson for the CBI confirmed that Singh's family has been notified about his arrest.

This action is part of the CBI's investigation into the ethnic violence in Manipur, which is being conducted under the directives of the Supreme Court.

Due to the ongoing law-and-order issues in Manipur, the trials related to the violence have been relocated from Manipur to Guwahati, as stated by the spokesperson.

Tensions escalated in Imphal following the news of Singh's arrest, leading to prohibitory orders being issued in several districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.

In response to the situation, internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN, have been suspended in these areas.

Protesters took to the streets, burning tyres and old furniture in Kwakeithel and Uripok, demanding the release of their leader.

Clashes erupted between demonstrators and security forces in various locations in the state capital on Saturday night, with a mob setting a bus ablaze in Khurai Lamlong, Imphal East.

Since May 2023, ethnic conflicts between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have resulted in over 260 fatalities and left thousands displaced.

Following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, the Centre imposed President's rule in the state on February 13, and the state Assembly has been suspended until 2027.
