Investigation into Vimal Negi's Death

Sunil Chadha
Shimla:
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently facing a perplexing dilemma regarding the death of Vimal Negi. The key question is why the Chief Engineer of the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation traveled from Shimla to Bilaspur if he had indeed decided to take his own life.

This intriguing aspect has become central to the agency's ongoing investigation, leading to extensive questioning of Vimal Negi's close relatives. Negi, originally from Kinnaur, was reported missing under suspicious circumstances on March 10, 2025, and his body was discovered in the Gobind Sagar Lake in Bilaspur on March 18.

Intensive Interrogation of Family Members

On June 4, 2025, the CBI conducted separate interrogations of Vimal Negi's elder brother, Surender Negi, and his wife, Kiran Negi, at the Shimla zonal office. Surender was questioned from approximately 10:30 am until 2:30 pm, followed by Kiran, who remained with investigators until 7:30 pm. This was Kiran's second appearance, as her previous testimony on Monday required further clarification.

Investigators are reportedly focusing on Vimal Negi's mental health leading up to his death. His family has informed the CBI that he was experiencing significant workplace harassment, which contributed to his psychological distress. They have also provided names of officials who may have contributed to this pressure.

Questions Surrounding His Journey

CBI officials are skeptical about the suicide theory, particularly given the route and destination of Vimal Negi's last journey. If he intended to end his life, why would he travel such a considerable distance from Shimla to Bilaspur? Furthermore, there are indications that he may have stopped in Bharari and met people along the way, which raises further doubts about the suicide narrative.

These lingering questions have prompted investigators to explore the possibility of foul play, suggesting that the circumstances surrounding his death may involve more than just mental distress. The agency is meticulously retracing Vimal Negi's movements in his final hours.

Analysis of Digital Evidence

The CBI is also scrutinizing digital evidence, including Vimal Negi's email exchanges, phone records, and CCTV footage from pertinent locations. Investigative teams have taken over records from the Shimla police SIT and divided the inquiry into two units, one led by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and the other by Superintendent Rajpal.

Additionally, forensic samples sent to the Junga lab are being analyzed, and crucial documents have been collected from the Power Corporation. Officials linked to the case may soon be called in for questioning.
