CBI Intensifies Investigation into Vimal Negi's Death with Potential Arrests Ahead

Ongoing Investigation into Vimal Negi's Mysterious Death
Shimla: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is actively investigating the enigmatic death of Vimal Negi, the former Chief Engineer of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation. A status report is anticipated to be submitted to the state high court shortly.
According to sources familiar with the case, the CBI may soon initiate its first arrests as the investigation progresses. Recently, the agency has increased its questioning efforts and document analysis, reportedly focusing on at least one senior official who has been instructed to remain in the state and is being summoned daily for questioning at the CBI office.
Court Proceedings Regarding Interim Bail
The latest developments in court include a hearing concerning the interim bail of Harikesh Meena, the former Managing Director of the Power Corporation, scheduled for Monday (June 16, 2025). Meena had previously obtained interim relief until July 16. During a prior hearing on June 5, his legal team informed the high court that a request had been made to include the CBI as a party in the case.
After the investigation was transferred from state authorities to the CBI, the government has chosen not to engage in further legal discussions. Consequently, the high court has amended the memorandum of parties to officially include the CBI in the proceedings.
Emerging Leads from Inconsistent Statements
So far, investigators have questioned over 30 individuals, including staff from the power corporation, members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), fishermen, and Negi’s relatives. However, several contradictions in the statements have surfaced, raising suspicions and prompting further investigation.
CBI officials are reportedly reviewing previous administrative and police investigations, along with an affidavit submitted by a former Director General of Police. These documents are being utilized to validate findings and address gaps in the timeline surrounding Negi’s death.
Fieldwork and Future Steps
On Saturday night, one of the three CBI teams involved in the case visited Hamirpur, and their return to Shimla was still pending as of Sunday evening, indicating that fieldwork is ongoing.
The agency is preparing to question high-ranking officials individually in the coming days, with their testimonies set to be cross-verified against existing evidence.
Sources indicate that the potential arrest of a senior official could mark a significant turning point in the investigation. The CBI is diligently constructing its case by connecting testimonial inconsistencies, digital records, and prior investigations. An official announcement or legal action may occur within days.
