Canada's Historic World Cup Journey Ends with Loss to Morocco
Prime Minister's Praise for Team
Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, expressed his admiration for the national men's football team following their exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026. Despite a 3-0 defeat against Morocco in the Round of 16 held in Houston, Carney highlighted the team's remarkable journey throughout the tournament.
In a post shared on X after the match, he celebrated the team's accomplishments and acknowledged the unwavering support from fans. "Today, I feel nothing but pride for @CANMNT_Official. An incredible run and a glimpse of what lies ahead. Thank you to our team, the fans, and everyone who contributed to making this World Cup our best yet," wrote the Prime Minister.
Morocco Ends Canada's Historic Run
Canada's World Cup journey concluded in Houston as Morocco showcased a strong second-half performance, becoming the first team to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.
Encouraging First Half from Canada
Despite the final score, the co-hosts started the match positively, creating more opportunities before halftime. Jesse Marsch's team nearly took the lead when Tani Oluwaseyi's shot was saved by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, and Alistair Johnston also came close with a header.
Morocco's Second-Half Dominance
Morocco returned from halftime with increased intensity, scoring first through Azzedine Ounahi, who finished skillfully after receiving a pass from Achraf Hakimi from a well-executed free-kick.
Canada sought to equalize but failed to convert their chances. Jonathan David's free-kick went over the bar, and substitute Tajon Buchanan's powerful long-range shot was saved by Bounou. As Canada pushed forward, Morocco capitalized on the counterattack, with Brahim Diaz assisting Ounahi for his second goal, followed by Soufiane Rahimi scoring the third goal just before the final whistle, sealing a 3-0 victory.
A Milestone Tournament for Both Nations
This victory extended Morocco's unbeaten streak to 10 matches and highlighted their rising status in knockout football, achieving seven wins in their last nine knockout matches at major international tournaments. Although Canada's journey ended in the Round of 16, this tournament marked a significant achievement for the co-hosts, as they advanced past the FIFA World Cup group stage for the first time in their history.
