Canada Celebrates Historic World Cup Victory Over Qatar
PM Carney Applauds Team's Character in Landmark Win
Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, lauded the national football team for their remarkable character and determination following their unprecedented 6-0 triumph against Qatar in the FIFA World Cup 2026. This victory marked Canada's first-ever win in the tournament's history. Carney was present at the Group B match held at BC Place in Vancouver and later visited the Canadian locker room to congratulate the players on this significant achievement. He shared a video capturing his interaction with the team, stating, "In moments like these, you truly see character and teamwork."
A Dominant Performance Secures Historic Win
Canada showcased an impressive performance throughout the match, overpowering Qatar and achieving a memorable milestone in World Cup history. This victory not only marked Canada's inaugural win in the FIFA World Cup but also made them the first host nation to net six goals in a World Cup match since Argentina's 6-0 win over Peru in 1978.
Jonathan David's Remarkable Hat-Trick
Jonathan David was the standout player for Canada, scoring a stunning hat-trick and becoming the first Canadian to achieve three goals in a World Cup match. He is also only the second player from outside Europe and South America to score a hat-trick in World Cup history, following USA's Bert Patenaude, who accomplished this in 1930 against Paraguay.
Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute, followed by David's goals in the 29th minute, first-half stoppage time, and a final goal deep into stoppage time. Nathan Saliba, who came off the bench, added another goal, while Qatar's Mohammed Mani inadvertently scored an own goal, leaving the visitors unable to respond to Canada's relentless offense.
Qatar Ends Match with Nine Players Amid Injury Woes
The match also saw Qatar facing disciplinary challenges, finishing with nine players. Assim Madibo received a red card after a VAR review for a dangerous tackle on Canadian midfielder Ismaël Kone, who was later stretchered off due to the injury, raising concerns among fans and players.
Saliba honored his injured teammate by displaying Kone's shirt after scoring. Despite the injury challenges, Canada maintained full control of the game, solidifying their position in Group B with this commanding win.
PM Carney's Proud Remarks
In his closing remarks to the team, Carney expressed the immense pride felt across Canada following this historic victory. He stated, "I couldn't be prouder as a Canadian. On behalf of all Canadians, thank you for everything you have done to represent our nation, your families, and your friends, and for teaching us all a valuable lesson."
