Strengthening Bilateral Relations

New Delhi, March 2: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney praised PM Narendra Modi's leadership during a joint press conference in New Delhi, emphasizing Modi's significant role in propelling India to become the fastest-growing economy globally over the past decade. Carney noted the increasing collaboration between India and Canada over the last year, describing it as a deepening partnership marked by new ambitions and foresight.

Carney stated, "Under your leadership, Prime Minister, India has achieved remarkable economic growth. The rise in per capita income is unprecedented. Canada aligns with your vision and purpose. The theme of your G20 presidency, 'One Earth, One Family, One Future,' encapsulates the collaborative spirit needed to tackle today's challenges, which cannot be addressed by a single nation alone."

During their discussions, both leaders explored various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including trade, investment, defense, education, clean energy, and technology. They also addressed global issues, particularly the threats posed by terrorism and extremism.

Following their meeting at Hyderabad House, several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in critical areas such as civil nuclear cooperation, energy, education, and cultural exchange.

Carney announced a renewed defense partnership between India and Canada, which includes maritime collaboration in the Indo-Pacific and military exchanges. He reflected on previous meetings with PM Modi at the G7 and G20 Summits, highlighting the growing engagement between the two nations.

"I appreciate the warm hospitality extended by Prime Minister Modi and the collaborative spirit that has characterized our relationship since our first conversation last June. The frequency of meetings between our foreign ministers and the visits by Canadian ministers to India signify a revitalization of our partnership, which is now more ambitious and focused than ever," Carney remarked.

He also revealed plans for a comprehensive economic partnership agreement aimed at reducing trade barriers and doubling trade between the two countries by the end of the decade.

Carney emphasized the familial ties that bind Canada and India, noting that nearly two million Canadians have Indian roots, contributing significantly to various sectors. He highlighted the presence of 400,000 Indian students in Canada, which is significantly higher than in the US or UK, as a testament to the strong connections between the two nations.

Additionally, a new talent and innovation strategy will be launched, featuring partnerships with prominent Canadian universities to enhance collaboration in fields like artificial intelligence and health sciences.

"We will also expand cooperation between the Canadian Space Agency and the Indian Space Research Organisation, focusing on climate monitoring and agricultural resilience across the Indo-Pacific," he concluded.
