Advocacy for Recognition of Major Mankotia

Local News Update from Shahpur: Residents of Shahpur are urging the Himachal Pradesh Government to commemorate Major Vijay Singh Mankotia by renaming Government College Shahpur in his honor and erecting a life-sized statue in a key area of Kangra district, as expressed by local advocate Shrey Awasthi.

Major Vijay Singh Mankotia was a notable officer in the Indian Army, recognized for his service during the 1962 India-China conflict as well as the wars of 1965 and 1971. Following his military career, he served as an MLA for five terms and held various ministerial roles within the Himachal Pradesh Government.

Awasthi emphasized that renaming the college to "Major Vijay Singh Mankotia Government College" would be a fitting tribute to his significant contributions to the community. He highlighted Mankotia's instrumental role in establishing the college, which included persuading local farmers to provide land for its development.

"Major Vijay Singh Mankotia was not just a courageous soldier but also a leader who maintained a strong connection with the Shahpur community. His efforts in advancing the region warrant lasting recognition," Awasthi stated.

He also expressed disappointment over the lack of state honors during Major Mankotia's funeral, noting that the absence of a state minister was particularly regrettable.

"Despite the circumstances surrounding his final rites, the government now has a chance to honor his legacy with a significant and lasting decision," Awasthi remarked.

Awasthi mentioned that a meeting with the Chief Minister’s Office has been requested, and a delegation from Shahpur plans to approach the Chief Minister soon. They will advocate for the college's renaming within a two-week timeframe.

Additionally, he called for a life-sized statue of Major Vijay Singh Mankotia to be placed in a prominent location in Kangra district, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.

"The soldier who defended our nation, the leader who represented Shahpur for many years, and the public figure who contributed to regional development deserves more than mere words of tribute. It is time for the government to take decisive action and honor his legacy appropriately," Awasthi concluded.
