Call for Investigation into Tragic Road Accident in Meghalaya

Demand for a Thorough Inquiry
Guwahati, June 7: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, has reached out to his counterpart in Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma, urging him to initiate a comprehensive investigation into a tragic road accident that resulted in the death of a law student from Guwahati.
On Saturday, Sarma took to social media to request that Sangma appoint a senior police officer to look into the details surrounding the death of Namrata Bora, a law student who reportedly lost her life in a road mishap near Nongpoh Police Station during the early hours of June 4.
"A case has been filed at Nongpoh Police Station. However, due to the concerns expressed by the grieving family and their supporters, I urge that a fair and unbiased investigation be conducted by a senior police officer to uncover all the facts related to this incident,” Sarma stated on a well-known micro-blogging platform.
Initial reports indicate that Bora had traveled to Shillong with five friends on the night of June 3. The accident occurred while they were returning the following morning when an unidentified truck allegedly collided with their vehicle.
Bora was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other four passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to a government hospital for treatment.
The incident has raised suspicions among Bora’s relatives, who suspect foul play. They noted irregularities, such as her apartment in Rukminigaon, Guwahati, being left unlocked, which they claim is unusual for her. They also mentioned that she typically informed them before embarking on any trips.
Compounding the mystery, a video from the night of the incident has emerged online. Reportedly filmed inside the vehicle, it features loud music, with Namrata seated in the back. Anayatul Wadud, identified as the son of an All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA, is seen driving, accompanied by others in the car.
As public pressure mounts alongside the victim’s family's concerns, the Meghalaya government has yet to officially declare whether the case will be handed over to a senior official or a specialized agency for further investigation.
