Calcutta High Court to Hear Appeal in R.G. Kar Murder Case: What’s Next for Sanjay Roy?
Sanjay Roy Challenges Life Sentence in High Court
In Kolkata, Sanjay Roy, the primary suspect in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, has filed an appeal with the Calcutta High Court to contest the life sentence handed down by a trial court earlier this year. His petition has been accepted, and the case is set for its initial hearing next week, likely on Monday, before a division bench comprising Justice Debangshu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi.
Following the trial court's ruling in January, Roy's legal representative, appointed by the State Legal Aid Services, indicated plans to appeal the decision. Now, five months later, they have formally approached the High Court to seek his acquittal from all charges.
The tragic incident involved the body of a junior doctor from the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, discovered in a seminar hall on August 9 of the previous year. The Kolkata Police initially led the investigation, resulting in Roy's arrest.
Subsequently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case after a directive from the Calcutta High Court. The CBI later identified Roy as the main perpetrator in this heinous crime.
During the investigation, the CBI also apprehended Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college, and Abhijit Mondal, the ex-officer-in-charge of the Tala police station, for allegedly tampering with evidence. However, both were granted 'default bail' due to the CBI's failure to submit supplementary charge sheets against them.
After extensive hearings, the trial court ultimately convicted Sanjay Roy for rape and murder, sentencing him to life imprisonment in January. Meanwhile, the CBI has sought the death penalty for Roy in light of the severity of the crime.
