New Developments in the R.G. Kar Case

Kolkata: On Thursday, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court mandated a renewed investigation into the R.G. Kar rape and murder case. This inquiry will be conducted by a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), led by an officer of Joint Director rank.

The bench, comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, issued this directive after considering the requests from the victim's family, concluding that their call for a new investigation was warranted.

The next court session is set for June 24, during which the CBI is required to present a progress report to the bench.

The victim, a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, was tragically found dead in a seminar room on the morning of August 9, 2024, after suffering a brutal rape and murder.

Initially, the Kolkata Police had launched an investigation, resulting in the arrest of Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer associated with the police, who was identified as the sole perpetrator.

The CBI later took over the case following a directive from the Calcutta High Court and confirmed Roy's role in the heinous acts.

Roy was convicted by a trial court and sentenced to life imprisonment, but the CBI appealed for the death penalty in the High Court.

Dissatisfied with the CBI's handling of the investigation, the victim's family sought a fresh inquiry, alleging that the CBI merely reiterated the findings of the initial police investigation.

The case was initially overseen by a different division bench, but after recusal, it was reassigned to the current judges, who have now ordered the new investigation.
