Calcutta High Court Orders Mohammed Shami to Pay Rs 4 Lakh Monthly Alimony

Court Ruling on Alimony Payments

In a significant development in the ongoing legal battle between Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and his estranged spouse Hasin Jahan, the Calcutta High Court has mandated that Shami pay Rs 4 lakh each month as alimony. This amount includes Rs 1.5 lakh for Jahan and Rs 2.5 lakh for the upkeep of their daughter.

This ruling follows more than six years of legal disputes, which began after Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence and infidelity in 2018. Although the court's decision is a notable advancement in the case, Jahan expressed her disappointment regarding the awarded sum, claiming it does not reflect Shami's affluent lifestyle or the increasing cost of living.

Jahan stated, "Considering his lifestyle, Rs 4 lakh is insufficient. We initially requested Rs 10 lakh per month, and prices have risen since then. I appreciate my lawyer Imtiaz Bhai and the Honorable Judge for this victory, but I will continue to seek a higher amount to better support our daughter."

Her lawyer, Imtiaz Ahmed, confirmed the court's order on Wednesday and suggested that the alimony amount could be increased in future hearings. He noted that the trial court has been instructed to resolve the main application within six months, with a strong possibility of the alimony being raised to Rs 6 lakh monthly.

Ahmed remarked, "Hasin Jahan has faced significant challenges from 2018 to 2024, and yesterday's ruling brings her considerable relief. Initially, she sought Rs 7 lakh for herself and Rs 3 lakh for her daughter in her petition. The final amount may be adjusted after the trial court concludes its hearings."

He also highlighted that the court reiterated Shami's ongoing obligation to support his daughter financially, indicating that he is expected to provide additional assistance as necessary.

This ruling represents a crucial moment in a highly publicized and contentious legal dispute, although the final resolution may still take several months as the legal proceedings continue.
