Silchar, May 30: In a major operation against drug trafficking, Cachar Police successfully confiscated 60,000 suspected Yaba tablets from a vehicle near the Lailapur patrol post late Thursday night, leading to the arrest of one individual.
This substantial haul is estimated to have a black-market value of around Rs 18 crore.
The operation was initiated based on credible intelligence indicating that a vehicle loaded with suspected narcotics was approaching Cachar from Mizoram.
Following this tip-off, police utilized technical resources to monitor the vehicle and established a checkpoint near the Lailapur patrol post.
The vehicle, identified as a black SUV with registration number AS-12U-7746, was stopped between 11 PM and midnight. The sole occupant, named Gamlen, hailing from Churachandpur in Manipur, was taken into custody for questioning.
A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered six black packets hidden beneath the seat, which upon inspection, were found to contain the suspected Yaba tablets.
A field test conducted with a drug detection kit confirmed the presence of methamphetamine.
In a statement to the press, Additional Superintendent of Police Rajat Kumar Pal verified the seizure and mentioned that the accused is now in police custody and will be presented for judicial proceedings.
The police plan to request his remand for further investigation to uncover the source of the drugs, their intended destination, and the larger trafficking network involved in this operation.
This seizure is part of an ongoing effort by Cachar Police to combat drug trafficking along one of the Northeast's most active and vulnerable narcotics routes, which has seen numerous Yaba seizures originating from the Myanmar-Mizoram region in recent months.
