Major Police Operation in Silchar

Silchar, July 30: On Tuesday, the Cachar Police apprehended 38 suspects connected to a series of burglary and street theft incidents that have plagued the residents of Silchar in recent months.

The arrested individuals were presented in court on Tuesday evening.

This extensive operation, executed within a 24-hour timeframe, resulted in the recovery of various stolen items, including motorcycles, bicycles, gold jewelry, smartphones, wristwatches, batteries, and metal wires.

During a press briefing at the Silchar Sadar Police Station, Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta stated that the arrests were made possible through coordinated raids conducted by five specialized police teams, each led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

Mahatta explained, “We responded to numerous complaints from citizens in Silchar and nearby areas. The evidence revealed a troubling trend of thefts linked to substance abuse.”

Most of the suspects are believed to be drug users, highlighting the concerning connection between increasing drug addiction and petty crimes in the region.

Mahatta assured the public, “This operation is just the beginning. We will enhance our efforts,” and urged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.

While the police's successful intervention has provided some relief, it has not entirely alleviated the anxiety felt by many in the city.

A resident from Sonai Road, a frequently targeted area, expressed, “Thefts have become commonplace. Every week, we hear about another burglary. People feel unsafe even in their own homes.”

Another local shared similar sentiments: “We commend the police for their actions, but what about the future? The core issue is addiction—until that is tackled, these incidents will persist.”

With the police indicating ongoing operations, this crackdown is viewed as a crucial initial step.
