C. Joseph Vijay Sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Marking a Political Shift
C. Joseph Vijay Takes Office
C. Joseph Vijay, popularly known among fans as Thalapathy, officially took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. This event signifies a significant political transformation in the state, attended by notable figures including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Following extensive political discussions and support from various parties, Vijay successfully crossed the majority mark in the assembly.
With this achievement, Vijay becomes the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu not affiliated with the DMK or AIADMK since 1967, effectively ending the long-standing dominance of these Dravidian parties.
Vijay's Political Journey
Vijay's rise from one of Tamil cinema's biggest stars to the highest political office in the state has emerged as one of the most compelling political narratives in recent years. The 51-year-old actor-turned-politician garnered support from 120 legislators, easily surpassing the 118 seats required for a majority in the 234-member assembly. His victory was made possible after several parties rallied behind his party, TVK, in the days leading up to the election.
Political Alliances Shift
A dramatic shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape occurred when Congress decided to break its alliance with the DMK and support Vijay's party. In addition to Congress, several other parties have also backed TVK, including:
- Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK)
- Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)
- Communist Party of India (CPI)
- Communist Party of India (Marxist)
While these parties have supported Vijay in forming the government, they have not officially joined the ruling coalition.
Formal Invitation from the Governor
Following the submission of support letters from allied parties, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar formally invited Vijay to form the government. An official statement released from Lok Bhavan indicated that Vijay informed the governor of his election as the leader of the TVK legislative party.
