BTC to Investigate Runikhata Violence as Tensions Ease

Tensions in Runikhata, Chirang, are easing following recent violence, prompting BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary to initiate an investigation into the incident. The BTC will seek a report from the Forest Department to assess the actions of officials during the eviction drive that sparked unrest. Amidst concerns of a political conspiracy, Mohilary emphasizes the need for a thorough inquiry while ensuring that not an entire community is blamed for the actions of a few. The Assam government has suspended mobile internet services to prevent the spread of misinformation, while security measures remain heightened in the area. As the situation stabilizes, further detentions related to the violence are anticipated.

Chirang, April 18: Following a period of unrest in Runikhata, Chirang district, BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary announced on Saturday that the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will request a report from the Forest Department regarding the recent incidents.

During a press conference in Dhaligaon, Mohilary explained that since the Home Department is outside BTC's authority, any legal proceedings would rely on the state government’s decisions.

He emphasized that BTC's primary concern is to investigate the actions of forest officials and determine if there were any oversights during the eviction operation that led to the violence.

“In light of the events in Runikhata, we will formally request a departmental report from the Forest Department, which will then be forwarded to the state government,” Mohilary stated.

He mentioned that the notice for the report would be issued on Monday and expressed optimism for a comprehensive inquiry.

Addressing rumors of a political conspiracy, Mohilary acknowledged that such possibilities exist but urged caution against generalizing blame to an entire community for the actions of a few individuals.

“This is not a new occurrence. I do not wish to condemn or hold an entire community accountable for the actions of one or two individuals. Those responsible will face legal consequences,” he remarked.

He added that clarity regarding the alleged assaults on police and a journalist's vehicle would only be available after the departmental report is completed.

“The Forest Department's role is to protect and preserve forests, and the report will assess whether officials acted correctly in their duties,” he noted.

Mohilary also indicated that he, along with BTC executive members and councillors, would visit Runikhata later to evaluate the situation on the ground.

In response to rising tensions, the Assam government suspended mobile internet and data services in Chirang and the adjacent Kokrajhar districts immediately.

“The Government of Assam fears that social media and internet could be exploited to disseminate inflammatory content and rumors, potentially worsening the situation,” the official notification stated.

However, voice calls and broadband services via fixed lines remain operational.

Security measures have been heightened in the region, with the Rapid Action Force (RAF), CRPF, and police conducting continuous patrols.

Authorities have detained approximately 15 additional individuals overnight, bringing the total number of arrests related to the violence to 19. These individuals are being held in various police stations and outposts throughout the district.

Sources indicate that further detentions may occur as the investigation continues.

As of the latest updates, the situation in Runikhata has stabilized, although security forces are maintaining a vigilant presence to prevent any potential resurgence of violence.
