Jaipur, June 6: A shocking incident has sent shockwaves through Rajasthan's Kota district, where Mahant Devanand Maharaj, the head of a well-known monastery in Chandresal village, was brutally murdered by unknown assailants late Friday night, according to police reports from Saturday.

Initial investigations reveal that the Mahant was resting in his monastery room when the attackers broke in and repeatedly stabbed him with sharp weapons.

Upon hearing his cries for assistance, nearby 'sevadars' and residents rushed to the scene, causing the attackers to flee into the night.

It is suspected that the assailants had locked another resident Mahant in his room before committing the crime. When the 'sevadars' and villagers entered, they discovered Devanand Maharaj lying in a pool of blood.

He was quickly transported to Maharao Bhim Singh (MBS) Hospital in Kota, where medical staff pronounced him dead due to severe blood loss and multiple stab wounds.

The body has been placed in the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

Authorities have not yet determined the motive behind this heinous act.

Community members described Devanand Maharaj as a gentle religious figure with no known personal conflicts.

Investigators are exploring various possibilities, including personal grudges, disputes over monastery property, and the chance of a robbery gone wrong.

Officials stated that no conclusions can be drawn until the perpetrators are identified and apprehended.

Due to the gravity of the situation, forensic experts and a dog squad were dispatched to the crime scene. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team collected blood samples, fingerprints, and other physical evidence from the Mahant's room.

Police have initiated questioning of 'sevadars', villagers, and recent visitors to the monastery.

Additionally, CCTV footage from roads linking Chandresal village and the Borkheda area is being scrutinized to track any suspicious activity during the night.

The murder of a senior religious leader within a monastery has sparked outrage among local residents and Hindu organizations.

Protesters are demanding the swift arrest of those responsible and have threatened to escalate their agitation if the case remains unresolved.

Extra police forces have been deployed in Chandresal village and outside the MBS Hospital mortuary to ensure public safety.

Senior police officials have called for calm and reassured the community that multiple teams are actively working on the case, promising that the culprits will be caught soon.

"Police and FSL teams are investigating every aspect of the murder at the scene. Based on the evidence gathered, efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects," stated Suman Chand, ASP, Kota.
