Sandhurst Fire Threatens Homes in Salt Lake County

A significant brush fire, known as the Sandhurst Fire, has ignited near Ensign Peak in Salt Lake County, situated just north of the Utah State Capitol and in proximity to downtown Salt Lake City. The fire was first reported at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday and has rapidly expanded to cover over 30 acres, leading to a substantial emergency response.

Officials have indicated that the fire poses a threat to numerous homes, resulting in evacuations in surrounding areas. Although specific evacuation zones have not been disclosed, residents are advised to heed the guidance of local authorities and remain vigilant for further updates.

The fire is located in the foothills above the city, east of Interstate 15, and adjacent to several residential neighborhoods. Reports from Watch Duty indicate that the fire is spreading quickly and may endanger structures in the vicinity.

In response, firefighters have initiated a vigorous firefighting effort from both ground and aerial units. Two single-engine air tankers from Tooele are actively dropping fire retardant in residential areas to help mitigate the fire's spread, while a helicopter is conducting water drops using resources from Red Butte Reservoir.
