British Armed Forces Take Action Against Russian Oil Tanker

On Sunday, British armed forces intercepted a Russian oil tanker, SMYRTOS, as it attempted to navigate through the English Channel. The operation involved Royal Marine Commandos and specialized officers from the National Crime Agency, as confirmed by the UK's Ministry of Defence. Prime Minister Kier Starmer stated that he had ordered the interception of the vessel.

The tanker will be detained and monitored off the southern coast of England while investigations are ongoing. The Ministry emphasized that the enforcement actions taken within Britain's territorial waters were in line with both domestic and international laws. Starmer remarked on social media that this operation represents a significant setback for Russia and serves as a warning to those supporting Putin's military actions in Ukraine.

Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis added that Russia's reliance on its shadow fleet to finance its conflict in Ukraine has been disrupted by this interdiction. The operation was further supported by aircraft from the Maritime Air Group, including an RAF P-8 aircraft, along with HMS Sutherland and HMS Ledbury.
