Cultural Ties Beyond Economics
Bhopal, August 8 - On Friday, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, emphasized that the relationships among BRICS nations extend beyond mere economic or political alliances. He highlighted the importance of shared cultural values, peace, mutual respect, and inclusive development during his address at the BRICS Cultural Festival held at Ravindra Bhavan. This event coincided with the third meeting of the BRICS culture ministers.
Madhya Pradesh's Cultural Significance
Shekhawat remarked, “The BRICS nations are not just about economic or political partnerships; they are deeply connected through shared culture, peace, mutual respect, and inclusive development.” He pointed out Madhya Pradesh's historical and cultural significance, noting that the state has long been a confluence of civilizations, ideas, beliefs, and artistic traditions. He referenced the prehistoric rock paintings of Bhimbetka, the tranquility of Sanchi, the grandeur of Khajuraho temples, and the vibrant traditions of tribal communities, stating that Madhya Pradesh beautifully reflects India's rich civilizational journey.
Universal Language of Music and Art
He also mentioned that while the languages, histories, and artistic expressions of BRICS countries may differ, music and art are universal, binding various civilizations in friendship, peace, and hope. Shekhawat welcomed all guests to Bhopal, known as the city of lakes and the heart of India, expressing confidence that their stay would strengthen mutual understanding and cultural ties within the BRICS family. An official statement noted that the festival conveyed messages of world peace, cultural dialogue, and global harmony through music, dance, and cultural presentations.
Showcasing Unity in Diversity
Renowned artists from BRICS nations showcased the spirit of unity in diversity through their performances. The special 32-minute musical program commenced with the presentation of “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah.” Following this, a blend of Hindustani and Carnatic music traditions was presented under the theme ‘Colors of Indian Music.’
The BRICS Peace Song
The highlight of the festival was the ‘BRICS Peace Song,’ where artists from various countries conveyed messages of peace, friendship, and global harmony. The event concluded with collective presentations of ‘Peace to All, Harmony to All’ and ‘Crescendo of Unity.’ According to the statement, the ‘BRICS Peace Song’ featured a unique amalgamation of musical traditions from partner countries, including Belarus, Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE.
Cultural Dialogue Through Dance
The Indian choral group performed “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah” in various languages, effectively expressing the spirit of cultural dialogue and global unity. The Madhya Pradesh Culture Department presented a 35-minute dance-drama titled ‘Amritasya Madhya Pradesh,’ showcasing the state’s cultural, spiritual, historical, and natural heritage. The presentation depicted UNESCO World Heritage sites, stories related to Lord Ram and Lord Krishna, Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar, Raja Bhoj, Bhopal, the Narmada River, and the cultural and spiritual heritage of Kumbh Mela 2028, involving over 125 artists.
A Fusion of Dance Styles
The performance featured a fusion of 12 dance styles, including Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Manipuri, contemporary dance, and martial arts. Traditional folk dance styles from Madhya Pradesh, such as Gond, Baiga, Gudumbaja, Matki, Badhai, and Baredi, were also included. The statement noted that the presentation was directed by renowned choreographer Maitreyi Pahadi, with lighting managed by Anup ‘Bunty’ Joshi. A special fashion presentation based on Madhya Pradesh's traditional attire and printing styles also captivated the audience.
Strengthening Cultural Diplomacy
The statement concluded that the BRICS Cultural Festival 2026 expressed world peace, cultural dialogue, international cooperation, and the Indian philosophies of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and ‘Unity in Diversity’ through music, dance, and art. It emphasized global harmony, mutual respect, and shared cultural heritage, further strengthening cultural diplomacy.
